The 6 inch Trench Mortar (Newton Mortar) is a real find. As far as I can tell there are only about three of these beasts left on display. One in England, one in New Zealand and the one I photographed in Jonesboro, TN. There may be more, but I haven't located them. The 6 inch mortar was a Brit piece from WWI. It was used by U. S. Coast Artillery batteries in France in WWI. My guess is that the piece in TN was in the TN National Guard and simply given to the county for a display when the guard re-equipped. I haven't had time to research that gun....it's just a guess.
