There are a lot of nasty virus running around on the internet including a some that can corrupt the data files on your computer.  Here are several programs that will help you keep your computer clean, including several that are free.  This list is far from complete, I am certain there are many others out there. 

If you do not have a virus scanner on your computer I would suggest getting one, or at least run one of the free online scanners to check your PC out.
